Outlines defines by the FIS

Following the 1st World Summit on the Environment, the FIS signed a treaty in 1994 and pledged to make respecting the environment an important issue when carrying out its activities. Since 1998, respect for the environment has been imposed on all World Championships and FIS competition candidates. All candidates for major FIS events must accept to adhere to precise specifications manual accompanying the candidature book. The Val d'Isère 2009 candidature committee thus made its ambitions clear by complying with the FIS "environmental guidelines" in March 2004.

AIt should also be noted that the FIS Organization contract signed by the Organizing Committee included this term in the "Principals of Organization" clause : "The national association, town and Local Organizing Committee agree and accept that the respect of the environment is an important factor and pledge to carry out their obligations and activities according to the terms and conditions of this present contract in such a way that all current legislations concerning the environment are fully respected, and whenever possible, to act in such a way to promote the protection of the environment.".

Erwin Lauterwasser, FIS delegate for the environment, accepted a position on the Val d'Isère Environment Committee as permanent advisor on environmental affairs. Here are some of his proposals :
- work with ecologists
- compensate for tree felling
- limit and rationalize water consumption
- consider hygiene and reception of spectators
- guarantee spectator transportation
- minimize the overall impact
- educate and raise awareness of the general public concerning the environment.
