The environment during the event
The question of the environment was mirrored right from the candidature phase, by the resort's aim to organize a "car-free Val d'Isère" for the event. In practice, this ambition will mean restricted motor vehicle access and the centre of Val d'Isère being reserved exclusively for pedestrians. In order to achieve this 3 complementary actions were necessary :
1. Offer simple public transport solutions. This has been achieved by the creation, by Savoy County Council, of a bus service from Bourg St Maurice train station. The Rhone Alp region plans to create a special train service to guarantee easy access to Bourg St Maurice SNCF train station.
2. Offer sufficient parking space close to the event without causing interference by excessive traffic flow or parking in the centre of Val d'Isère. Despite the fact that the resort already has a considerable number of parking spaces, it has pledged to create a further 450 spaces close to the Bellevarde cable car (building work has already commenced)
3. Develop a traffic flow plan forming a practical orchestration of the "car-free Val d'Isère". Val d'Isère commenced two years ago to progressively implement this traffic flow plan in order to adapt it and make it functional during the event
