The 2009 philosophy

The event's environmental policies

In 2003, Val d'Isère's bid to host the World Championships was the starting point of a new future approach, based on sustainable development, which is to be adopted by the town over the next fifty years. The World Championships represent a symbolic stage as they constituted the perfect opportunity to set the ball in motion and subsequently show off all the actions that have been implemented in a wide range of areas, including the respect for the alpine environment and lifestyle and the efficient management of the expansion of the tourist trade. They are also to be a showcase for all the eco-friendly options possible when organizing a sporting event. The event is to be used as a stepping-stone towards a new kind of ski resort integrating these all these eco-friendly concepts. The resort is putting to good use the transience of the competition for the benefit of sustainable development.

A specific environment budget was integrated in to the Organizing Committee's initial general budget forecast in order to carry out this project to the full.

ISO 14001 Certification

The fact that the Organizing Committee has been awarded the ISO 14001 certification is a sign of the success of its environmental operations. The protection and preservation of the natural environment was pinpointed as one of the strong points of the resort's bid and has lead to the implementation of a considerable number of environmental management procedures. These measures involve the identification of any activities that may have a detrimental effect on the environment and consequently eliminate the negative impacts or reduce them to a strict minimum.

Environmental management methods

The Val d’Isère 2009 Organizing Committee is supported in its operations by the ADEMA (Agency for Energy Development and Management), an institutional partner of the event.

After an initial analysis of the activities generating a negative impact on the environment, the Organizing Committee subsequently defined the major areas in which it aimed to improve:
- Raw material management
- Limiting energy consumption
- Waste management
- Traffic and transport
- Preservation of animal and plant life
- Visual pollution
- Communication, awareness and promotion of nature preservation
- Environmental marketing
